Editor's note, August 24, 2026: Funerals are like weddings, unnecessary drama about who sits where, who is coming, and what clothes to wear.

Our friend Andy Hale helped schedule the church and preached the sermon. I really appreciate him doing that for us and making it so easy. We had not been part of this church community for a little bit, and they really went to bat for us during this time in our lives.

The funeral home did all the funeral services for free. They did a viewing for our family to see Seth's body one last time the day before the funeral. Leah and I did not attend, as we had already said goodbye and were pretty devastated. This hurt some of my family because we were not there for the viewing, and I want to apologize to them. It was not our intent to hurt them.

I really appreciate the funeral home doing this for us.

Transitions LifeCare was there for us in Seth's final days, ensuring he was comfortable and helping us deal with it. They still send us two cards every year around his birth and death dates. This is a really nice touch, and I am always happy to see their letters. I really want to thank them for continuing to think of us.

All the nurses and doctors at Chapel Hill Pediatrics were great to us and Seth. They made our seven-month stay there in the hospital room feel natural and comforting. Leaving them to go home and have Seth pass away at home was hard. It was the right thing to do. I really want to thank them for caring for Seth and our family during our time there. They have an incredibly difficult job. The worst part about staying there was that all the rooms were full. It is hard to see that many children hurting and going through similar issues. I cannot imagine the strength they have to work in that environment every day.

The UNC Flight Crew ended up driving the ambulance delivering Seth from the hospital back to our house to begin his hospice care. They are a cool team, and I appreciate them doing that for us.

My brother Ben was having his own difficult time understanding how to deal with his nephew passing. He came into town for the funeral with the rest of my family, and I remember him being so upset about what to wear to the funeral. It means a lot to me that he was there for me.

My brother Michael stayed with us during Seth's hospice stay at home. My brother doesn't like me very much, but he was there for me when I needed him, and I really appreciate he did that for us. I wish he would love Leah and me as much as we love him, and I am optimistic that day will come.

The service went well. We sang the songs Seth loved for me to sing to him. My Aunt Susan planned the after-party at White Deer Park after the service and got the food catered. Fried chicken, sweet tea, and other great food. I really appreciate her, Uncle Rob, and their whole crew being there for us.

While my family had left Maryland to come to Garner for the funeral, some drug addicts decided to break into my father's home and steal some musical instruments and electronics and other things. I really wish they had not done that. It hurt my brothers and me. It was an incredibly distasteful thing to do. I hope they are in better places in their lives now and learned something from this.
